Walter Butler- Ch. 28: Conclusion

In the later period of Walter Butler’s life, he was regarded as a respectable and valued member of the Hobart Town community. It would also appear that he had earned respect during his fourteen years in the Williamstown community before relocating his family to Hobart. It is a great tragedy that the end of Walter’s life should be tainted by his insolvency and having to endure the accompanying deprivations associated with losing all that he had worked so hard to achieve. He must have been so disillusioned that his children (from his third family) were no longer in a comfortable financial situation at the time of his demise. However, he did his best to provide them with the education they needed to make their own way in the world.

Given his tough beginnings as a “currency lad”, illegitimate son of an Irish convict, orphaned at an early age, and despite his rather unforgivable treatment of his first two families, Walter matured into a worthy, sensible, and highly respected citizen. His father would have been proud of him.
